Traceability and sustainability are at the core of our operations. We source beans from hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers across Ghana and provide year-round support to help them achieve the best income for their crop. Our support ranges from micro financing, to training on Good Agricultural Practices and Climate-smart agriculture, to supplying seedlings.
Olam Cocoa uses a proprietary digital tool (Olam Farmer Information System) to protect forests, enhance cocoa quality and improve the livelihoods of growing communities by collecting actionable data to inform training and investment programmes.
Data such as farm size, tree age and health, and distance to important education and medical infrastructure is GPS mapped to identify opportunities and risks to our business. Today OFIS has 52,000 cocoa farmers registered in Ghana, spanning more than 5,400 communities and supporting 120,000 farmers in total.
Since 2012, we have worked with local farmers to raise in excess of 9 million hybrid seedlings. We have helped them to improve fertiliser application, to rehabilitate old cocoa farms and adopt agroforestry practices.
Through our farmer income diversification initiatives and by investing in social infrastructure such as renovating and building schools and health centres and facilitating access to clean water and sanitation. We support in excess of 2,500 households annually.
To combat forced labour and protect children, we have established Child Labour and Remediation Systems in 165 communities across Ghana, which we will continue to maintain and grow.
Established in 2009 and located in the Kaase Industrial Area, Kumasi, our state-of-the-art bean processing factory is accredited by the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority with one of the highest quality standards in the industry. We employee 300 individuals at our operations, and create indirect employment for another 1,000 in the wider community.
Through our Kumasi operations, we uphold a range of certifications to ensure we meet market demands and offer our customers choice and assurance. Our factory is FSSC 22000 certified for food safety, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certified for sustainable liquor production and we offer Halal and Kosher products.
Under Olam Cocoa’s Unicao brand, the factory produces a variety of masses ranging from mild roast to full-bodied roasted nibs and enables us to offer cocoa products from single-source origin for multiple cocoa applications.
Unicao cocoa products are sourced from several origins. Read more about the history of this, and other cocoa brands in our portfolio.
The One Farmer, One Acre programme in Ghana arranges for young adults within the farming community to prune an acre of a cocoa farm for a farmer with the labour costs covered by Olam Cocoa and Mondelez. At the end of 2018, over 4,800 acres had been pruned involving more than 2,670 farmers. Improvements in yield have also resulted in farmers paying for extra acres to be pruned, which supports the young adults in work. Hear from the farmers in our blog.
Our vision is of an environmentally positive, professionalised and quality focused cocoa supply chain comprised of farmers who are earning a living income and whose children have access to education. Read more about our cocoa sustainability programmes globally.
