Olam has been in Japan since 2011, supplying and serving what is now the fourth-largest coffee market in the world. We also import cocoa, nuts, spices and sesame.
The coffee business continues to grow thanks to our level of service and local support to customers, including complete Vendor Managed Inventory solutions. We supply green coffee, specialty coffees and soluble coffee products to industrial suppliers, as well as supplying small roasters and local operations.
Our broader business development in the market has included the 2016 announcement of a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation - the MC Agri Alliance - to import and distribute a broader range of food products in Japan.

Olam Food Ingredients (OFI) details plans for commissioning of New Zealand dairy processing plant
Facility to produce high quality dairy ingredients and support innovation capability

OFI, a global leader in natural and sustainable ingredient solutions, today confirmed plans to develop a new dairy processing facility in the North Island town of Tokoroa, New Zealand.
The first stage of the new investment development, expected to be commissioned in Q3 of 2023, in time for New Zealand’s peak season, will involve the construction of a spray dryer facility, capable of producing high-value dairy ingredients.
OFI ranks among the top three dairy suppliers in the world. The Tokoroa plant will become part a global network that spans 20 major milk consumption markets, such as South-East Asia, China, the Middle East, and Africa.

Coffee kiosk gives Brazilian smallholders direct access to global markets
Olam is experimenting with technologies that reach remote coffee farmers and empower them to sell to the company directly, thereby giving them access to global market prices.
Its first kiosk in Ibicocara - Brazil's Bahia region, allows farmers to drop off coffee samples and then Olam manages the testing and pricing negotiation via its digital platform, Olam Direct. The company has received more than 50 samples in July, its first month of operation, and farmer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Olam hopes to roll out the kiosks to serve additional farmers in 2021 and the locations may offer other value-add services for farmers and their communities.
Edmilson Rocha Aguiar, who farms 140 miles away from the closest Olam facility in Vitoria da Conquista, was one of the first participants in the kiosk test.

UN World Day Against Child Labour 2021: Putting children first in cocoa

This week, the world’s attention turns to a heavy burden that can damage a child’s health and education: child labour. In OFI’s cocoa business, we are focused on solving this problem every day.
Most child labour in cocoa relates to children carrying out hazardous tasks on the family farm, distinct from the much rarer issue of forced labour, and has no one cause. Labour laws can be misunderstood, and schools might be located far away. Even if there is a school nearby, children may not have the documents they need to enrol. When combined with rural poverty, many parents think their child’s time is best spent helping on the farm. And now, these cocoa-growing communities are also battling a global health pandemic.
