Boosting Nigerian Soybean Production.

Olam is one of the largest buyers of Nigerian soybeans, which are used as raw materials for our feed mills. We’re supporting several ways to increase Nigeria’s production from 500 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) a year to 2,000 TMT over the next seven years.

This will not simply make Nigeria self-sufficient in plant proteins, it will turn the country from a net soybean importer to a net exporter.

    Measures to Increase Growth

    • Supporting smallholders by partnering with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan. Together, we promote high-quality seeds for farmers across Nigeria which are tailored to the country’s climactic conditions, and which will in turn help improve livelihoods
    • Identifying potential government, NGO and private sector partners to jointly develop farmer support and agronomy programmes, including training in Good Agricultural Practices
    • The establishment of 220 hectares of trial seed farming at our site in Kaduna which we plan to gradually expand
    • Further investments and capacity building in soybean processing, including on-going work with local companies to improve efficiencies and capacity utilisation.
