Olam and other global players form coalition to champion change – supporting SDG12 to reduce food loss globally by 2030.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos today, a coalition of 30 leaders across industry including Sunny Verghese, CEO of Olam, government ministers and civil society leaders launched a new effort to reduce food loss and waste all over the world by 2030.

Global food waste is becoming an increasingly urgent issue and, according to the World Resources Institute, causes significant economic, social and environmental issues. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) states that food waste amounts to $940 billion in global economic losses, consumes about a quarter of all water used by agriculture, and generates about 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The coalition, called Champions 12.3, has been formed to meet Target 12.3 of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12), which aims to halve global food waste and reduce food losses along supply chains by 2030. Champions 12.3 will complement and build upon successful UN programmes designed to reduce food loss including SAVE and Think.Eat.Save.

Sunny Verghese CEO of Olam commented:
“Nowhere is the interconnectedness of food waste, food security and poverty more acute than in developing countries, where 40 percent of food is lost during harvest, drying and pre-consumption storage and transport. The ripple effect of tackling SDG 12.3 is obvious and we encourage more businesses to become Champions.”

Other Champions include; Dave Lewis, Group Chief Executive of Tesco and Chair of Champions 12.3; Dr. Hans Hoogeveen, Vice-Minister for Agriculture, the Netherlands; Dr. Andrew Steer, President and CEO, World Resources Institute; Dr. Judith Rodin, President, The Rockefeller Foundation; Achim Steiner, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme and Co-Chair of Champions 12.3.
