Connected Farmer Alliance: Partnership between TechnoServe, USAID, Vodafone and Olam addresses challenges faced by smallholder farmers

    News

Growth in the agricultural sector has been shown to be at least twice as effective at reducing poverty as growth in other sectors. This fact forms the basis of TechnoServe’s Connected Farmer Alliance, a public-private initiative which improves the livelihoods of 500,000 smallholder farmers in East Africa through mobile technology.

In his contribution to Olam’s 25th Anniversary Portfolio of Perspectives, TechnoServe’s Senior Vice President of Development Simon Winter outlines the project and explains why providing farmers with technical advice, market information and payment systems via mobile technology can make such a significant impact on their lives and how this, in turn, helps to alleviate poverty and improve lives.

TechnoServe is an international non-profit organisation that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets.
